Scope And Contents

This pictorial page is dedicated to the albums that Peggy Lee recorded for Capitol Records. Lee's original albums for that label are presented chronologically, from Rendezvous With Peggy Lee (1948) to Norma Deloris Egstrom From Jameston, North Dakota (1972). In addition to the front covers of the original issues, those of many reissues are displayed as well. Please notice that Capitol compilations or hits packages are separately covered, in a second page. For further clarification about this page's scope, and for advice on how to locate particular albums, see final notes below.

I. RENDEZVOUS WITH PEGGY LEE

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Rendezvous With Peggy Lee / Format: 78 album / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Cc 72 / Rel. Year: 1948 / Volumes: 3 (1018-10120) / Tracks: 6 / Note: Items #1 and #2 show the original editions of the album under discussion.

2. Title: Rendezvous With Peggy Lee / Format: EP box / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Ccf 151 / Rel. Year: 1948 / Volumes: 3 (54 511-513) / Tracks: 6 / Note: Items #1 and #2 show the original editions of the album under discussion.

3. Title: Rendezvous With Peggy Lee / Format: CD / Label: Dutton Vocalion / Cat. Num.: (England) Cdus 3008 / Rel. Year: 2000 / Tracks: 26 (total). 6 (from Rendezvous With Peggy Lee) + 20 (bonus tracks) / Note: This CD contains the 6 tracks previously issued in items #1 and #2 above, but not the tracks added to the LP format (items #4 and #5 below). It is also worth noting that this is a legitimate release, whose tracks were licensed from Capitol Records. (Some of Mike Dutton's Vocalion releases are Public Domain issues, whereas others, such as this one, are licensed.)

Album Covers Shown:

Album Covers Shown:

7. Jacket of the 78 album (item #1 above).

8. A shot of the EP box (item #2 above), with the 45s on display.

9. Back cover of the EP box (item #2 above).

  Artwork Shown:

  10. Another shot from the Rendezvous With Peggy Lee photo session.

General Note
A Dutch LP entitled Rendez-Vous With Peggy Lee is actually an anthology that bears no relation to the Capitol album under discussion. The same is true for a Public Domain CD that goes by the shorter title of Rendez-Vous.

II. MY BEST TO YOU

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: My Best To You / Format: (10") LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: H 204 / Rel. Year: 1950 / Tracks: 8 / Note: My copy of this 10" LP has a blue front cover, just like the one shown in image #1. I found image #2 on the web, without any accompanying details about it. Initially I assumed that I was looking at the cover of the EP edition -- which I have never seen. However, the discographical data at my reach refutes such as a possibility. According to the data, the EP contains only six songs. Meanwhile, in image #2, eight songs are listed. It thus seems likelier that this green cover is an alternate (non-domestic?) edition of item #1.

3. Back cover of item #1.

Related Album Cover, Not Shown Above:

4. Title: My Best To You / Format: EP box / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Ccf 204 (F 15482-15484) / Rel. Year: 1950 / Volumes: 3 / Tracks: 6

General Note:
This album is actually an anthology. Its masters were not newly recorded for this 1950 project, but culled from 1946-1947 sessions.

III. CAPITOL PRESENTS ... PEGGY LEE / THE FABULOUS MISS LEE

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Capitol Presents ... Peggy Lee / Format: (10") LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (England) Lc 6584 / Rel. Year: 1953 / Tracks: 8 / Note: This album was both prepared and issued in England. It was never released in the United States. All its numbers had been originally released on 78 discs; see general note below.

2. Title: The Fabulous Miss Lee / Format: LP & Reel / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (England) Tp 352 & Ttp 352 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Tracks: 12 (total). 7 (from Capitol Presents ... Peggy Lee) + 5 (bonus or added tracks) / Note: Although not identified as such, this World Record Club LP is a reissue of the Capitol album discussed in entry #1 above. Of the 8 tracks included in the 1953 album, "Why Don't You Do Right?" was the only one to be left out from The Fabulous Miss Lee. The decision to exclude it was probably prompted by the number's widely availability in England at the time, thanks to the then-recent release of the hits package Bewitching-Lee! (1962).

General Note
Capitol Presents ... Peggy Lee is actually an anthology. Its masters were not newly recorded for this 1950 project, but culled from 1946-1950 sessions. The same statement applies to the reissue (The Fabulous Miss Lee), except for the fact that it also includes two tracks taken from 1957 singles. Until the advent of the CD era, these two British albums were the only LPs in which fans could find singles as rare as "Just A Shade On The Blue Side," "Every Night," "Where Are You?" and "Uninvited Dream."

IV. THE MAN I LOVE

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: The Man I Love / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: T 864 / Rel. Year: 1957 / Tracks: 12 / Note: The first image shows the original American LP edition of the album. I am not certain about the identity of the second image, which I found in the internet. It could belong to a foreign (British, Japanese) edition with which I'm not yet acquainted, or it could simply be a fan's alteration of image #1. (The alteration would consist of tinting the picture a fiery red.)

3. Title: The Man I Love ("Nostalgia" Reissue Series) / Format: cassette & LP / Label: EMI's Pathé Marconi / Cat. Num.: (England) TcCaps 26 0005 4 & Caps 26 0005 1 / Rel. Year: 1984 / Tracks: 12 / Note: Reissue of the original album. Dolby's audio noise reduction process was applied to most of the cassettes in this 1980s British-French reissue series, often with commendable results.

4. Title: The Man I Love / Format: CD / Label: DRG / Cat. Num.: 97483 / Rel. Year: 2009 / Tracks: 14 (total). 12 (tracks from the original album) + 2 (bonus tracks) / Note: Official, licensed CD, sourced from the original Capitol masters. For other CD editions, see #12 and #13 below.

Album Cover Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

8 & 9. Title: Peggy Lee [aka That's All] / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (France) 4 864 / Rel. Year: 1957 / Tracks: 4 / Note: Though all 4 tracks were culled from the album The Man I Love, neither the back nor front cover of this issue reveal its connection to that album. The reason could be that the album might have not been released in France in 1957. (I have not found evidence of release. However, readers must bear in mind that information about Lee releases in non-English speaking countries is scant and hard to come by.

Album Cover Shown:

10. Title: Peggy Lee / Format: LP / Label: EMI's Music For Pleasure / Cat. Num.: (Australia) Mfpa 8094 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in original Capitol LP. / Note: Reissue.

11. Title: Peggy Lee {Orchestra Conducted By Frank Sinatra} / Format: LP / Label: EMI's Music For Pleasure / Cat. Num.: (England) Mfp 8094 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in the original Capitol LP. / Note: Reissue.

12. Title: The Man I Love / Format: reel & LP / Label: World Record Club - Capitol / Cat. Num.: (England) Tt 925 & St 925 / Rel. Year: 1970 / Tracks: same 12 as in the original Capitol LP / Note: Reissue. See also note #16 below.

Album Cover Shown:

13. Title: The Man I Love - If You Go / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 8 55389 2 6 / Rel. Year: 1997 / Tracks: 24 (12 from each album) / Note: This is an official release, from the company that owns the masters. Of the various CD reissues, item #4 above sports the best sound quality by far.

14. Title: The Folks Who Live On The Hill / Format: 8-track & cassette & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Df 518 (twofer set: 8xf/4xf/Stbb 517) / Rel. Year: 1970 / Tracks: 10 / Note: Abridged budget reissue of #1 above. Uses "fake" or reprocessed stereo. This LP is also available as a twofer set, in all three formats (8xff 517 & 4xff 517 & Stbb 517), paired with the album Broadway Ala Lee; see this pictorial discography's twofer page.

Album Covers Shown:

15. Title: Diva / Format: CD / Label: Delta's Xtra / Cat. Num.: (England) 26596 / Rel. Year: 2008 / Tracks: 21 / Note: This Public Domain CD is a twofer that does not identify itself as such. It begins with the 12 tracks from The Man I Love, continuing with Lee's 9 tracks from the 1955 Decca studio album Songs From Pete Kelly's Blues. Read also the note for the next item.

16. Title: The Legendary Peggy ("The Best Of The Legends Of Music" Series) / Format: CD / Label: Luxury / Cat. Num.: (Germany) unknown / Rel. Year: 2008 / Tracks: 18 / Note: In 2007, the album The Man I Love had its 50th birthday. The occasion was reason for both celebration and concern. In many European countries, 50 years is the period after which albums fall into Public Domain, thereby allowing budget-quality record labels to (ab)use those albums by releasing them in subpar versions. Such versions do not use the original masters, but are instead copied from old LPs and old CDs. And indeed, the year 2008 saw the release of the entire album in two Public Domain CDs. This one (The Legendary Peggy) mixes the album's tracks with 6 Decca studio tracks recorded in 1956.

17. Title: Things Are Swingin' & The Man I Love ("Original Masters Collection" Series) / Format: CD / Label: Play / Cat. Num.: (England) Play 24 7 / Rel. Year: 2010 / Volumes: 2 / Tracks: 27 (total.) 24 (12 from each album) + 3 (bonus tracks) / Note: This Public Domain issue moves one step further in the bastardization of Lee's album, copying not only the 1957 Capitol album under discussion but also the 1958 Capitol album Things Are Swingin' (discussed in section VI below).

Album Covers Shown:

18. Back cover of item #12. Notice the stereo claims. Since The Man I Love was originally released in mono only, such claims point to this issue's use of fake or reprocessed stereo.

19. Back cover of the original LP (item #1 above).

Other Versions Of Note, Not Shown Above:

20. Title: The Man I Love / Format: LP / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (Australia) Enc 9066 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: 12 / Note: Reissue of the original album.

V. JUMP FOR JOY

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Jump For Joy / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)t 979 / Rel. Year: 1958 / Tracks: 12 / Note: This is the original 12" LP edition of the album.

2. Title: Jump For Joy, Part 1 / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Eap 1 979 / Rel. Year: 1958 / Tracks: 4 / Note: Although the front cover of this EP identifies itself as "part 1," hence suggesting that there was at least one more extended play issue -- or even two -- I know of no other Jump For Joy EPs. (One possibility is that, although not listed in my sources, the album was actually released as three jukebox EPs. Were such the case, the shown cover would obviously belong to the first of the jukebox EPs.)

3. Title: Jump For Joy / Format: CD / Label: DRG / Cat. Num.: 97484 / Rel. Year: 2009 / Tracks: 14 (total). 12 (tracks from the original album) + 2 (bonus tracks) / Note: Official, licensed CD, sourced from the original Capitol masters. For another CD edition, see item #7 below.

Album Covers Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

7 & 8. Title: Things Are Swingin' - Jump For Joy / Format: CD & CS / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 8 54543 2 5 & 7243 8 54543 4 9
/ Rel. Year: 1996 / Tracks: 24 / Note: This is an official issue, released by the company that owns the masters. (However, of the various CD reissues, item #3 above sports the best sound quality.) The cassette version was issued in Thailand; I do not know if it was released anywhere else.

  Album Cover Shown:

  8. Back cover of the original LP.

VI. THINGS ARE SWINGIN'

Album Covers Shown:

Album Covers Shown:

4 & 5. Title: Things Are Swingin', Part 1 {aka It's A Wonderful World} / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Eap 1 1049 / Rel. Year: 1958 / Tracks: 4 / Note: Both covers show the EP edition of Things Are Swingin'. I am not sure of the reason for the existence of two covers; it may be that the cover with the yellow stripe is American, and the cover with the white stripe British. Although the second cover identifies itself as "part 1," thereby suggesting that there was at least one more EP (or even two) with the same title, I know of no other Things Are Swingin' EPs. (One possible explanation is that, although not listed in my sources, the album was actually released as three jukebox EPs. If such were proven to be the case, the second cover would obviously belong to the first of the jukebox EPs.)

Album Covers Shown:

6. Title: Things Are Swingin' / Format: CD / Label: CAPITOL Jazz / Cat. Num.: 7243 5 97071 2 9 / Rel. Year: 2004 / Tracks: 14 (total). 12 (tracks from the original album) + 2 (bonus tracks) / Note: This is an official release, from the company that owns the masters. Of the various CD reissues, this item sports the best sound quality by far.

7. Title: Things Are Swingin' (The Blue Note Collection) / Format: CD / Label: CAPITOL Jazz - Blue Note / Cat. Num.: 7243 5 97071 2 9 / Rel. Year: 2007 / Tracks: 14 (total). 12 (tracks from the original album) + 2 (bonus tracks) / Note: I have never seen a physical copy of this item, nor do I have any further specifics about its release. It appears to be a special, European (Spanish? British?) variation on item #6. It could be part of a multiple, various-artists CD set from Blue Note.

Album Cover Shown:

8. Title: Todo Se Dice Con Swing / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Argentina) 1049 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in the original Capitol LP. / Note: Hispanic edition of item #1.

9 & 10. Title: Things Are Swingin' / Format: reel & LP / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (England) Ttp 617 & Tp 617 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in the original Capitol LP. / Note: Reissue of item #1.

Album Covers Shown:

11 & 12. Title: Things Are Swingin' - Jump For Joy / Format: CD & CS / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 8 54543 2 5 & 7243 8 54543 4 9 / Rel. Year: 1996 / Tracks: 24 / Note: This is an official issue, released by the company that owns the masters. (However, of the various CD reissues, item #6 above sports the best sound quality.) The cassette version was issued in Thailand; I do not know if it was released anywhere else.

13. Title: Things Are Swingin' & The Man I Love ("Original Masters Collection" Series) / Format: CD / Label: Play / Cat. Num.: (England) Play 24 7 / Rel. Year: 2010 / Volumes: 2 / Tracks: 27 (total). 24 (from the original albums)+ 3 (bonus tracks). / Note: This is an unauthorized CD reissue from a Public Domain label [i.e., a company that copies its tracks from an already existent CD, or from LPs and singles, not from the original masters]. Dipping lower than previous Public Domain companies, this one shamelessly appropriated the entire contents of the Capitol Jazz CD edition of Things Are Swingin' (item #6 above), including that disc's bonus tracks.

14. Title: These Ladies Can Swing {Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone} ("Original Masters Collection" Series) / Format: CD / Label: Play / Cat. Num.: (England) unknown / Rel. Year: 2010 / Volumes: 3 / Tracks: 14 / Note: This item is from the same label as item #13, and the contents are partially the same. Since I don't own either release, I can only rely on information about them found elsewhere -- especially, in online commercial sites. If that information is correct, then the label misappropriated and released the Capitol Jazz CD edition of Things Are Swingin' both as part of a twofer (item #13) and as part of this 3CD set.

Album Covers Shown:

15. Title: I Like Men! - Things Are Swingin' / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2234 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 24 (12 from each album).

16. Back cover of the original LP.

VII. I LIKE MEN!

Album Covers Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

4. Title: ¡Me Gustan Los Hombres! / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Argentina) Eap 1 1131 / Rel. Year: 1959 / Tracks: 4 / Note: Hispanic edition of item #3.

5. Title: I Like Men! / Format: reel & LP / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (England) T 518 / Rel. Year: 1966 / Tracks: 11 (all from the original album, which has 12; in other words, it skips one track) + 1 (bonus track) / Note: Reissue of item #1.

Album Cover Shown:

6. Title: I Like Men! - Things Are Swingin' / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2234 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 24

7. Title: I Like Men! - Sugar 'N' Spice / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 4 96729 2 5 / Rel. Year: 1998 / Tracks: 24 (12 from each original album) / Note: This is an official issue, released by the company that owns the masters.

(This particular shot, previously part of the Michael Ochs Archives, has also been used as the front cover of various EP, LP, and CD issues.)

VIII. BEAUTY AND THE BEAT!

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: Beauty And The Beat! / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)T 1219 / Rel. Year: 1959 / Tracks: 9 (vocals by Peggy Lee) + 3 (instrumentals), for a total of 12 / Note: Shown herein are the mono and stereo covers of the album's British edition, which has the same catalogue number, tracks, and title as its American counterpart. I have chosen to display these British covers because their picture quality is better than that of the American covers. Besides, American and British front covers are nearly identical.

General Note:
The album Beauty And The Beat! is a studio recreation of a live concert that could not be released due to technical difficulties experienced at the performing venue. For full details about the concert and about the P.A. system at the root of the technical problems, consult this page. The original concert tapes have actually been preserved, but their atrocious sound quality have rendered them unreleasable. (One small exception to this unfortunate situation is the concert's version of "Always True To You In My Fashion." It has been issued -- separately from the album, in a Peggy Lee compilation -- and it sports very good sound quality.)

Album Covers Shown:

3-6. Title: Souvenir Of The 1959 DJ Convention / Format: LP (boxed set) / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: St 1219 / Rel. Year: 1959 / Tracks: Same as in the original American LP. / Note: Limited to a 2,500 pressing, this item was sent to those disc jockeys who had pre-signed for a copy when they attended the Miami convention in which the original Lee-Shearing concert took place. The item is a gatefold LP box . The front cover is completely blank, except for the album's title, rendered in gold lettering (image #3). When opened, the box's inner sides reveal themselves to be the front and back covers of the regular, commercially released Capitol LP (image #4). Also found inside, along with the vinyl, are two photos (image #5) and two typewritten letters. One photo is of Peggy Lee, who has signed it with the comment "Let's cut another one soon" and the closing words "Love, Peggy" (image #6). The other photo shows George Shearing and includes another inscription apparently penned by Peggy Lee herself ("Couldn't have done it without you, George"). As for the handwritten letters, there is one from Capitol Records, author unknown; the other is signed by Lee on behalf of both her and Shearing. The two letters apologize for the sonic problems that prevented many of the convention's attendees from hearing the concert.

Album Covers Shown:

7. Title: Beauty And The Beat!: Capitol Presents Peggy Lee And George Shearing And The Quintet / Format: LP / Label: EMI Bovema / Cat. Num.: (The Netherlands) 5c 056 81 465 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same ones as in the original American LP / Note: Laminated picture sleeve.

8. Title: The Beauty And The Beat ("Sterren" Series) / Format: LP / Label: EMI Bovema / Cat. Num.: (The Netherlands, Germany) 2c 068 54 576 [Also, in Germany, Hst 1219] / Rel. Year: unknown, but no earlier than 1968 / Tracks: same ones as in the original American LP.

9. Title: The Beauty And The Beat ("Supersound" Series) / Format: LP / Label: EMI Bovema / (The Netherlands) Cat. Num.: 5c 022 81 465 / Rel. Year: unknown (probably 1970s or 1980s) / Tracks: same ones as in the original American LP.

General Note:
In some of the above-shown Dutch versions, the album's original title has been slightly altered. (An article has been added at the start. At the end, the exclamation sign has been deleted.)

Album Covers Shown:

10. Title: Beauty And The Beat! ("Retrospect" & "Nostalgia" Reissue Series) / Format: cassette & LP / Label: EMI & Pathé Marconi / Cat. Num.: (France Pm 154 576 4/1) & (England Tcems/Ems 1158; also 26 1005 4/1) / Rel. Year: 1985 (France) and 1986 (England) / Tracks: Same ones as in the original LP. / Note: Reissue of the original album. Dolby's audio noise reduction process was applied to most of the cassettes in this 1980s British/French reissue series, often with commendable results.

11. Title: Beauty And The Beat! ("Jazz Vocal Masterpieces" Series) / Format: LP / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (Japan) Ecj 50023 / Rel. Year: 1972 / Tracks: Same ones as in the original LP. / Note: This is one of at least two Japanese LP editions of the original album; the other one is shown next. A couple of Japanese CD editions are also shown below. (As previously mentioned, there are many foreign editions of this album, especially from Japan. I have included here all the ones that have, to my knowledge, artwork different from the original LP. As for foreign covers that are identical to the American original, I have sampled liberally, without attempting to include every single one. For a list of further editions, consult this discography's pages for foreign and British issues.)

12. Title: Beauty And The Beat! ("Jazz Vocal Best Collection" Series) / Format: LP / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (Japan) Ecp 88026 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: Same ones as in the original LP. / Note: This is one of at least two Japanese LP editions of the original album; the other one is shown in the preceding image.

Album Covers Shown:

13. Title: Beauty And The Beat! / Format: cassette & LP / Label: Pausa / Cat. Num.: Pc 9053 & Pr 9053 / Rel. Year: 1985 / Tracks: same ones as in the original LP. / Note: Licensed reissue of the original album.

14. Back cover of the original LP, featuring Peggy Lee and George Shearing photos which were taken during the actual performance at the Miami convention. (On the other hand, the photo of Lee and Shearing that graces the front cover of Beauty and The Beat was taken inside the recording studio. See image #20, too.) Incidentally, the back cover's shot of Lee is also reproduced in the singer's autobiography, in a larger size.

General Note:
On CD, Beauty And The Beat! exists in two master versions. Both versions were issued in Japan first, in the United States afterwards. Both feature the same couple of bonus tracks, too.

One version is basically identical to the original LP, aside from the inclusion of bonus tracks. This version comes from second-generation tapes which contain dubbed-in applause and spoken introductions, spliced between the songs. Represented by CDs #14 and #16, this incarnation of the album is a favorite of many fans, for whom pleasure is to be had in the recreation of a live-in-concert atmosphere.

The other version (represented by CDs #15 and #17), has no applause and no spoken introductions. A remix of the first-generation 3-track master tapes, this version captures a wealth of vocal nuance that is not readily apparent in the earlier incarnation of the album. The singer and the musicians sound as if they were right next to us -- or, to use parlance common among music fans, in our living rooms. Sonically, it is therefore the best of the two alternatives.

In addition to the four CD editions whose front covers are displayed above, there are other editions, of course, most of them from Japan. Japanese editions released before 2002 feature the same mastering as the 1988 Japanese version (and the 1992 American version). I believe that all editions released after 2002 boast the same mastering as the 2002 Japanese version (and the 2003 American version).

IX. LATIN ALA LEE!

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: reel & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Zt 1290 & (S)T 1290 / Rel. Year: 1960 / Tracks: 12 / Note: These are the original editions of the album. There was also a domestic LP reissue (item #4 below).

3. Title: Latin Ala Lee (Starline Series) / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (England) Srs 5080 / Rel. Year: 1971 or 1974 / Tracks: 11 / Note: In both the US and the UK, Latin Ala Lee! was originally released in 1960. The 1960 UK edition features the same artwork as the United States edition. They also share the same catalogue number. Hence the two editions would seem to be identical. However, there is a significant difference between them: "Till There Was You," one of the original 12 tracks, is missing from the British edition. In the early 1970s, the album was issued for a second time in England. That reissue (image #3) misses the aforementioned song, too. (Some music guides list all 12 songs under catalogue number Srs 5080. Such guides are mistaken.)

4. Title: Broadway Ala Lee / Format: 8-track & cassette & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Sf 519 / Rel. Year: 1970 / Tracks: 10 / Note: Abridged budget reissue of the original album. Uses "fake" or reprocessed stereo. Paired with the album The Folks Who Live On The Hill, this LP is also available as a LP twofer, in all three formats (8xff 517 & 4xff 517 & Stbb 517); see this discography's twofers page.

Album Covers Shown:

5. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Sm 1290 / Rel. Year: unknown; 1970s or 1980s / Tracks: 12 / Note: This is a domestic reissue of the original LP (image #2). The yellow label on the label of the vinyl is among the details that distinguishes it from the original.

6. Title: Ritmos Latinos A La Manera De Peggy Lee / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Argentina) 29150 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in original American LP / Note: Hispanic editon of the original album.

7. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: T 1290 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: 12 / Note: This artifiacially colored edition of the album seems to have been distributed in The Philippines.

Album Covers Shown:

12. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: CD / Label: Dcc / Cat. Num.: Dzs 181 [EMI's licensing number: 7243 5 23808 2 4] / Rel. Year: 2000 / Tracks: 12 (from the original album) + 3 (bonus tracks, two different from item #10 below) / Note: Licensed reissue. Remastered from the original three-track tapes, though not mixed anew.

13. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: CD / Label: Hallmark / Cat. Num.: (England) 710262 / Rel. Year: 2011 / Note: Oftentimes, the CDs released by this mass-marketing budget label suffer from poor quality. (Apparently transferred from worn-out LPs, some of Hallmark's CDs include audible pops and needle skips.)

14 & 15. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: CD & audiophile-LP / Label: S&P / Cat. Num.: Spr 712 & Sp 504 [EMI's licensing number: 7243 5 84238 2 2) / Rel. Year: 2003 / Tracks: 12 (from the original album) + 3 (bonus tracks, two different from item #9 above) / Notes: This licensed CD reissue boasts vibrant sound quality. The original master tapes were used, as well as WAVAC amplifiers. Remixed in the same studio where the original sessions were recorded.

Album Covers Shown:

16. Title: Latin Ala Lee! & Olé Ala Lee! / Format: CD / Label: Toshiba-EMI / Cat. Num.: (Japan) Tocj 5418 / Rel. Year: 1991 /Tracks: 24 (12 from each album) / Note: This is an official CD reissue, released by the company that owns the masters. However, for the best-sounding CD edition of Latin Ala Lee!, see item #10 above. As can be seen in the displayed image, the front cover of this CD does not reveal itself as a twofer, but gives instead the false impression of consisting of just Latin Ala Lee!.

17. Title: Latin Ala Lee! & Olé Ala Lee! / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 8 56056 2 8 / Rel. Year: 1997 / Tracks: 24 (12 from each album) / Note: This is an official CD reissue, released by the company that owns the masters. However, for the best-sounding CD edition of Latin Ala Lee!, see item #11 above.

18. Title: Latin! / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (Japan) Gx 106 / Rel. Year: possibly 1987 / Tracks: 14 (12 from Latin Ala Lee!, 2 from & Olé Ala Lee!) / Note: This is an official CD reissue, released by the company that owns the masters. Without the benefit of any additional information at hand, I am presuming Pigeon to be a Public Domain label. There is also a chance that this CD might actually be part of a boxed set, containing perhaps albums by different artists.

Album Covers Shown:

19. Title: Latin Ala Lee! / Format: Jukebox EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Xe 1290 (Xe 1 1290, Xe 2 1290, Xe 3 1290, Xe 4 1290, Xe 5 1290) / Rel. Year: 1960 / Tracks: 10 (2 per disc) / Note: For its jukebox version, the album Latin Ala Lee! was split into five forty-fives. (Incidentally, the sleeve seen in this image unexpectedly shows the item's catalogue digits as 1407, a number which I believe to actually belong to a Kingston Trio issue, not to this Lee set. Notice that the name Peggy Lee was obviously handwritten on the sleeve and probably superimposed on a portion of the record label's text. In summary, this sleeve does not seem to have originally belonged to the Lee set shown, and hence its catalogue identification is misleading. It's also worth noting that online sellers generally offer each of these jukebox 45 separately, without any clarification -- nor, knowledge, I would assume -- that the items were originally part of a set.) On another curious matter, the two sources on which I found information about Lee's jukebox set agree on all details, including the existence of only 5 discs, rather than 6. Out of the 12 songs found in the LP counterpart, the two missing in the jukebox version are "Heart" and "Cest Magnifique." In what can not be a coincidence, those are actually the two songs which were included in the 45 that was sold in music stores. Most likely, Heart / C'est Magnifique was separately sent to juke owners, too, as a jukebox single. I have not found corroboration that such was the case, however. (Alternatively, and less likely, it may be that a marketing strategy led Capitol to altogether leave those number out of jukeboxes.)

20. Side-by-side view of the album Latin Ala Lee! and its sequel, Olé Ala Lee!, both released in 1960. Twin artwork by Marvin Schwartz, who received a Grammy nomination for the earliest of the two; original concept suggested by Peggy Lee herself.

21. Back cover of the British Latin Ala Lee! reissue LP (item #3 above). Like the back cover of the original American album, this one features a drawing of "matadora Lee" on top of a bull, too.

Other Versions Of Note, Not Shown Above:

22. Title: Latin Ala Lee! ("Nostalgia" Reissue Series) / Format: cassette & LP / Label: EMI's Pathé Marconi / Cat. Num.: (England) Tcems 1304 & Ems 1304 / Rel. Year: 1988 / Tracks: same 12 as in original album. / Note: Reissue of the original album. Dolby's audio noise reduction process was applied to most of the cassettes in this 1980s British/French reissue series, often with commendable results. Said to contain the track "Till There Was You," which was excluded from earlier British editions of the album.

X. ALL AGLOW AGAIN!

Year: 1985 / Tracks: same 12 as in the original Capitol album. / Note: Reissue of the original album. Dolby's audio noise reduction process was applied to most of the cassettes in this 1980s British/French reissue series, often with commendable results.

General Note
The album All Aglow Again! is actually an anthology. Its masters were not newly recorded for this project, but culled from sessions which dated as far back as 1948 and 1952.

The contents were transferred from vinyl copies of the albums, not from the original masters.

  Artwork Shown:

   6. A Capitol trade ad, stressing the rave reviews that Peggy Lee had received for her Basin Stree East engagement.

General Note:
This album (originally released on LP as seen in image #1, and reissued on CD as seen in image #2) is partially live, partially recorded in the studio. The live songs (about half of the album) were taped in concert at the Basin Street East club. The other half (most notably, the ballads) are studio recordings. Accounting in part for the decision to re-record some of the numbers was the bad cold from which Peggy Lee was suffering during the last days of this January-February 1961 concert engagement. In 2002, the final concert night from this Basin Street East engagement was released (item #3) -- all tracks live.

The other two covers are the British stereo and mono editions, which have the same catalogue number, tracks, and title as the American counterpart.

Album Covers And Photo Shown:

4. Title: Blues Cross Country / Format: LP / Label: EMI / Catalogue Number: (France) 062.55294 / Release Year: probably 1962 / Tracks: same 12 as in the original American LP / Note: Found on the web, image #5 shows that the front cover of the album's French edition differs from the American original in the prominence given to Quincy Jones' name. Bear in mind, however, that I have not seen a physical copy of the French edition. Hence I cannot categorically confirm that this web image is an accurate reproduction of the French cover (as opposed to an image re-designed by a web user).

5. Title: Blues Cross Country ("Retrospect" reissue series) / Format: cassette & LP / Label: EMI's Pathé Marconi / Catalogue Number: (France) 155 294 4 & 155 294 1 (also Pm 231) / Release Year: 1984 / Tracks: same as in the original American LP / Note: Reissue of the original album. 6. Title: Sugar 'n' Spice / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (England) Eap 1 1772 / Rel. Year: 1962 / Tracks: 4

8. Expanded version of one of the photos that graces the cover of Sugar 'n' Spice. In November 1962, it made appearances as an ad in trade magazines.

9. Another Capitol trade ad, promoting not only Sugar 'N' Spice but also Lee's next two LPs. (All three albums were released within a few months of each other.) "She gives you fever," reads the caption under the photo.

XVIII. MINK JAZZ

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Mink Jazz ("Capitol's New Dimensions In Jazz" Series) / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)T 1850 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Tracks: 12 / Note: Shown herein is the British mono LP edition, whose cover is essentially identical to that of the original American LP. The two LPs also share the same catalogue number.

2. Title: Mink Jazz / Format: CD / Label: CAPITOL Jazz / Cat. Num.: 7243 4 95450 2 1 / Rel. Year: 1998 / Tracks: 17 (total). 12 (from the original album) + 5 (bonus tracks) / Note: CD reissue of item #1.

Album Covers Shown:

6. Back cover of the original LP (item #1).

Album Covers Shown:

7 & 8. Title: Peggy Lee / Format: LP & reel / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (England) T 745 & Tt 745 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 12 as in original Mink Jazz LP / Note: Reissue of item #1.

Album Cover Shown:

9-11. Title: Modern Jazz; The Collectors' Edition / Format: CD / Label: EMI Korea / Cat. Num.: (Korea) Ekj 30D0320 / Rel. Year: 2010 / Volumes: 30; Lee's is the 25th. / Tracks: I have not been able to find a track listing, nor have I seen a physical copy of this box. Obviously, it includes the 12 tracks from the original album. The question is whether it also contains the 5 bonus tracks that first appeared in the American CD edition (item #2 above). My educated guess is that the box's edition of the album is the American one, which would mean that all 17 tracks are included. / Note: A reproduction of the Peggy Lee album can be seen in all three photos above (#8: last row, second from left; #9: second row, last reproduction; #10: partially visible, near the bottom left).

XIX. I'M A WOMAN

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: I'm A Woman / Format: jukebox EP & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: _ 587 & (S)t 1857 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Tracks: 12 / Note: Image #1 shows the original LP edition of the album (British, laminated, mono version).

2 & 3. Title: I'm A Woman / Format: 8-track & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: 8m 1857 & Sm 1857 / Rel. Year: 1977 / Tracks: 12 / Note: Image #2 shows a 1977 reissue of item #1. Image #3 shows an eight-track cartridge edition for which I do not have a release date. Due to the similarity in the catalogue numbers of item #2 and #3, I am assuming that this 8-track was released in 1977, too. In other words, it was not issued in tandem with the original album (item #1).

4. Title: I'm A Woman / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (England) Eap 4 1857; (Germany) K41 590 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Tracks: 4

Album Cover Shown:

5. Title: I'm A Woman (aka Fever) / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Australia) Eap 1 20512 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Note: Two of the four tracks come from the LP I'm A Woman. The other two are from hit singles.

6. Title: I'm A Woman / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (France) Eap 1 20444 / Rel. Year: 1963 / Tracks: 4 / Note: Strictly speaking, this EP is only minimally qualified for inclusion in this section about the album I'm A Woman. Its qualifications are the sharing of the same title and the inclusion of the title track. Otherwise, there are no close connections. As can be seen, the artwork is different. More importantly, the EP's other three tracks are from the Sugar 'n' Spice album sessions.

Album Cover Shown:
7. Title: Peggy Lee / Format: LP Box / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Stcl 576 / Rel. Year: 1970 / Volumes: 3 / Tracks: 30 / Notes: This set is an abbreviated reissue of the LPs Big Spender, A Natural Woman, and I'm A Woman. Ten tracks were chosen from each of those albums.

Album Covers Shown:

8. Title: Mink Jazz - I'm A Woman / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2237 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 24 (12 from each album).

9. Title: I'm A Woman - Norma Deloris Egstrom From Jamestown, North Dakota / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 8 74179 2 2 / Rel. Year: 2004 / Tracks: 23 (total). 22 + 1 (previously unissued bonus track) / Note: This is an official issue, released by the company that owns the masters.

   Album Cover Shown:

  10. Back cover of the original LP (item #1). As for the back cover of Capitol's reissue LP (item #3), it contains the same liner notes   but skips the reproductions of previous albums and their track listings. It also skips the original cover's details about mono/stereo formats.

  Artwork Shown:

   11. Unused shot from the photo session that supplied the covers for the albums Mink Jazz & I'm A Woman.

Related Issues Of Note, Not Shown Above:

12. Title: Pass Me By - I'm A Woman / Format: 8-track cartridge / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: 8x2t 2507 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 23

XX. IN LOVE AGAIN!

Album Covers Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

4. Reel counterpart of LP #1 above.

5. Another display of the jukebox EP whose cover was previously seen in image #2 above. Besides the front cover and the vinyl, this picture shows the mini-reproductions of the EP and the carton strips that were part of the package sent to jukebox operators.

6. Title: In Love Again! - In The Name Of Love / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 5 21096 2 3 / Rel. Year: 1999 / Tracks: 23 (total amount from the original albums twofered) / Note: This is an official issue, released by the company that owns the masters.

Related Issues Of Note, Not Shown Above:

7. Title: In Love Again! - In The Name Of Love / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2238 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 23 (total amount from the original albums twofered).

XXI. IN THE NAME OF LOVE

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: In The Name Of Love / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)T 2096 / Rel. Year: 1964 /Tracks: 11 / Note: Original album. There is also a reissue version; check comments and images #6, #7, #8, and #9 below.

2. Title: In The Name Of Love / Format: 8-track & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: 8xy 4618 & Sy 4618 / Rel. Year: 1974 / Tracks: 11 / Note: The shown 8-track cartridge was one of the formats in which the album was reissued in 1974. So far, I have found no evidence that an 8-track edition was released earlier (i.e., in the mid- or late 1960s).

3. British mono LP edition of the album. It has the same catalogue number and tracks as the American edition (image #1).

4. Title: In The Name Of Love / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (England) Eap 4 2096 / Rel. Year: 1964 / Tracks: 4

Album Cover Shown:

5. Title: In The Name Of Love / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: St 2096 / Rel. Year: 1964 /Tracks: 11 / Note: This is the same item seen in image #1. (Just one difference: this is the stereo version. Image #1 shows the mono version). My focus for image #5 is not the front cover but the vinyl itself. Compare it to the vinyl shown in image #7.

6. Back cover of the original LP, whose front cover is seen in image #5 (and also in image #1). Compare this back cover to that of the reissue LP, seen in image #8. (Incidentally, this back cover happens to belong to a British edition. No matter: it is nearly identical to the American edition.)

7. Title: In The Name Of Love / Format: LP & 8-track / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Sy 4618 / Rel. Year: 1974 /Tracks: 11 / Note: Ten years after the release of the original issue, Capitol reissued this album on both LP and 8-track cartridge (image #2). Notice the vinyl's orange-colored label, different from the original one, which is black with a rainbow-colored ring (image #5). I believe that Sy was a budget series which also re-released albums such as Frank Sinatra's Come Fly With Me (Sy 4528) and Nat King Cole's Dear Lonely Hearts (Sy 4577).

8. Same reissue LP seeen in image #7. The top half shows the reissue's back cover, whose sparseness makes it vastly dfferent from the back cover of the original album (image #6.)

Artwork Shown:

10. Portrait, obviously based on the photo that graces the front cover of the album In The Name Of Love. This portrait is on display (or, otherwise, used to be on display) at the North Dakota state capitol.

Other Versions Of Note, Not Shown Above:

11. Title: In Love Again! - In The Name Of Love / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2238 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 23 (total amount from the original albums twofered).

XXII. PASS ME BY

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Pass Me By / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)T 2320 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 11 / Note: This is the original edition of the LP.

2 & 3. Title: Pass Me By / Format: Jukebox EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Sxa 2320 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 6 / Note: Jukebox edition of the original album. Although it contains just half of the LP's tracks, all 12 songs are listed in this EP's front cover (image #3) and elsewhere. Shown in image #2 are the carton strips for the Seeburg jukebox machine in which jukebox EPs were played. Inserted along with those strips inside the machine were mini reproductions of the EP's front cover, which are also shown in this image.

4. British edition of the American LP. Same catalogue number and same tracks as item #1.

Album Covers Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

8. Back cover of the LP, British edition (nearly identical to the American edition).

9. A black & white picture from the Pass Me By photo session.

Related Issues Of Note, Not Shown Above:

XXIII. THEN WAS THEN AND NOW IS NOW!

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: Then Was Then And Now Is Now! / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (S)T 2388 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 11 / Note: Shown above are the original American cover in its stereophonic version (image #1) and the British cover in its monophonic version (image #2).

Album Cover And Artwork Shown:

3 & 4. Title: Then Was Then And Now Is Now! / Format: jukebox EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Su 2388s / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 6 / Note: Image #3 shows the front cover of the jukebox EP under scrutiny. Image #4 shows the jukebox EP's title strips and front cover mini reproductions, which were inserted in Seeburg jukebox machines. The total numbers of tracks is 6, as I have just indicated. Although the front covers of 1960s Capitol jukebox EPs tend to list the entire set of tracks found in the LP counterparts, in reality, those EPs include only about half of the LP's tracks.

Album Covers Shown:

5. Title: Then Was Then And Now Is Now! - Pass Me By / Format: reel-to-reel tape / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Y2t 2374 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 22 (all 11 tracks from each original album).

6. Title: Then Was Then - Bridge Over Troubled Water / Format: CD / Label: Collectors' Choice / Cat. Num.: Ccm 920 2 / Rel. Year: 2008 / Tracks: 24 (all 12 tracks from each original album) / Note: This is an legitimate issue, licensed from the company that owns the masters.

Album Cover Shown:

7. Title: Peggy Lee (aka Sneakin' Up On You) / Format: EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (France) Eap 1 20741 / Rel. Year: 1965 / Tracks: 4 / Note: This EP culls songs from Lee's two 1965 original LPs, Pass Me By and Then Was Then And Now Is Now! -- two tracks from each album.

  Artwork shown:

  5. Back cover of the British edition of the LP (nearly identical to the American counterpart).

General Note
This album bears the title Then Was Then Now Is Now! in its front cover and vinyl. However, the back cover and the spine add the article and to the title. The reel version also adds the article -- and so have I, in this discography.

XXIV. GUITARS ALA LEE

Album Covers Shown:

1 & 2. Title: Guitars Ala Lee / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: S(T) 2469 / Rel. Year: 1966 / Tracks: 12 / Note: This is the original LP edition of this album. Images #1 and #2 show two copies of the same cover. (This duplication is supplied here merely for visual contrast. The aging and handling of these two copies makes them look slightly different.)

3. Title: Guitars Ala Lee / Format: jukebox EP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: Su 2469 / Rel. Year: 1966 / Tracks: 6 / Note: The total numbers of tracks is 6, as I have just indicated. 3. Title: Extra Special! - Somethin' Groovy! / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 4 93065 2 3 / Rel. Year: 1998 / Tracks: 22 / Note: This is an official CD issue, released by the company that owns these albums' masters.

General Note:
The album Extra Special! is actually an anthology. Its masters were not newly recorded for this project, but culled mostly from singles recorded between 1960 and 1966 -- except for three of the tracks, which had never been issued before. On a different note, be aware that a CD on the Marginal label, entitled Extra Special and using the exact same cover, is actually a bootleg whose tracks are different from those in the Capitol LP under scrutiny.

XXVII. SOMETHIN' GROOVY!

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Somethin' Groovy! / Format: 4-track & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: 4cl 2781 & (S)T 2781 / Rel. Year: 1967 / Tracks: 11 / Note: This is the original LP edition of the album.

2. Title: Extra Special! - Somethin' Groovy! / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 4 93065 2 3 / Rel. Year: 1998 / Tracks: 22 (all 11 tracks from each album) / Note: This is an official CD issue, released by the company that owns these albums' masters.

3. Back cover of the original LP.

XXVIII. TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: Two Shows Nightly / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: St 105 / Rel. Year: 1968 / Tracks: 12 / Note: This is the original edition of the album.

2. Title: Two Shows Nightly / Format: LP / Label: EMI - CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Australia) St 105 / Rel. Year: 1968 / Tracks: 12 / Note: Australian pressing of the original LP. The front cover is identical to the American cover, except for the absence of the punched-in word "free" in the upper right corner. My thanks to Thomas Ludwig for his very kind assistance in tracking down this rare album cover.

3. Title: Two Shows Nightly / Format: CD / Label: Collectors' Choice / Cat. Num.: 2070 2 / Rel. Year: 2009 / Tracks: 24 (total). 12 (from the original album) + 12 (bonus tracks, 2 previously unissued) / Note: This is an official issue; it uses the original masters, licensed from the company that owns them.

4. Title: Two Shows Nightly / Format: CD / Label: Collectors' Choice / Cat. Num.: (Japan) 2070 2 / Rel. Year: 2009 / Tracks: 24 (total). 12 (from the original album) + 12 (bonus tracks, 2 previously unissued) / Note: Japanese pressing of item #3.

General Note:
At Peggy Lee's request, the original album (item #1) was cancelled in the United States after it had already been manufactured. Before the cancellation, promotional copies were sent out to music critics, disc jockeys and radio stations, and those copies eventually fell into the hands of sellers and collectors. They carry the word "FREE," punched into the front cover's upper right corner. I have also heard that additional copies (remainders) were eventually given, free of charge, to charity organizations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army, but I do not know if such hearsay is based on fact or on speculation. Anecdotal evidence also shows that, years after its aborted release, the album was being sold at the Olssen's record chain in Washington DC, at budget price (99 cents); those remainders also have the word free punched into the upper right corner of the front cover.

Lee's request to have the LP withdrawn was carried out in the United States, but not everywhere abroad. Copies manufactured in Australia or New Zealand (image #3) are identical to those pressed in the United States, but do not carry the "free" sign. Copies from Japan are pressed in red vinyl, which was typical of Japanese LPs from the 1960s. Given the scarcity of such foreign copies, the foreign release of the album might have been limited to just a small pressing in each country.

One of Lee's main objections to the album seems to have been the subpar sound quality of various tracks on side B of the vinyl. The CD issue (item #2) fixed those quality problems, thereby eliminating the need for objection.

Album Covers Shown:

5 & 6. Back covers of the original American (#4) and Australian (#5) LPs. Both covers feature the same set of liner notes, but differ in their layout and publishing details.

Album Cover Shown:

7. Title: Peggy Lee In Concert ("The Entertainers" Series) / Format: CD / Label: Joker Tonverlag AG - Sarabandas - Promo Sound AG / Cat. Num.: (Switzerland) 346 / Rel. Year: 1996 / Tracks: 25 (total). 13 (from the album Basin Street East Proudly Presents Miss Peggy Lee) and 12 (from the album Two Shows Nightly, though without some of the spoken patter) / Note: This is a bootleg release. The contents were transferred from vinyl copies of the albums, not from the original masters.

XXIX. A NATURAL WOMAN

Album Covers Shown:

1. Title: A Natural Woman / Format: 8-track & LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: 8st 183 & St 183 / Rel. Year: 1969 / Tracks: 11 / Note: This is the original LP edition.

2. Title: A Natural Woman / Format: LP / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (Australia) R 02199 / Rel. Year: unknown / Tracks: same 11 as in original American album / Note: Reissue of item #1.

Album Cover Shown:

Album Cover Shown:

4. Title: A Natural Woman - Is That All There Is? / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 5 92657 2 8 / Rel. Year: 2003 / Tracks:
25 (total). 11 (from A Natural Woman) + 10 (from Is That All There Is?) + 4 (bonus tracks). / Note: This is an official CD reissue, from the company that owns the masters. Unfortunately, the extensive mastering done on this digital issue is not, in my estimation, entirely satisfactory. The 4 bonus tracks are from the LP Somethin' Groovy!, which was never never released in England.

XXX. IS THAT ALL THERE IS?

Album Covers Shown:

1 - 4. Title: Is That All There Is? / Format: reel & LP & cassette & 8-track / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: M 386 & St 386 & 4xt 386 & 8xt 386 / Rel. Year: 1969 [reissued 1975] / Tracks: 10 / Note: Shown herein are all the configurations in which the album was released. The original LP (St 386) and the reel came out in 1969. The cassette version came out not in 1969 but in 1975, when the LP was also reissued (Sm 386). Other than the slightly different catalogue number, there are no significant differences between the original LP and the reissue LP. I am not certain of the 8-track cartidge's release date; based on its cover's design (especially the logo), it might have been 1975.

Album Covers Shown:

Artwork Shown:

8. Shown herein is a promotional version of the album under scrutiny. Besides the regular vinyl and the regular album jacket, this promo included a paperfold wrapper which showed a full-size head shot of Peggy Lee.

9. Back cover of the original LP.

Album Cover Shown:

10. Title: A Natural Woman - Is That All There Is? / Format: CD / Label: EMI / Cat. Num.: (England) 7243 5 92657 2 8 / Rel. Unfortunately, the extensive mastering done on this digital issue is not, in my estimation, entirely satisfactory. The bonus tracks are the same ones (from the album Somethin' Groovy!) which were added to item #5 above (i.e., the British edition of the LP).

XXXI. BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER

Album Covers Shown:

1, 2 & 3. Title: Bridge Over Troubled Water / Format: reel & 8-track & LP & cassette / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: M 463 & 8xt 463 & St 463 & 4xt 463 / Rel. Year: 1970 / Tracks: 10 / Note: Shown herein are the original editions of the album, except for the cassette version.

Album Cover Shown:

5. Title: Bridge Over Troubled Water / Format: LP / Label: CAPITOL / Cat. Num.: (Japan) Cp 8976 / Rel. Year: possibly 1970 / Tracks: 10 / Note: Japanese edition of item #3.

XXXII. MAKE IT WITH YOU

Year: 1970 / Tracks: 10 / Note: Images #1 and #2 show two of the configurations in which Make It With You was originally issued -- reel and LP. Image #3 displays the front cover of the British LP edition, which has the same catalogue number and the same tracks as the American original.

Album Cover Shown:

4. Title: Make It With You - Where Did They Go / Format: CD / Label: Collectors' Choice / Cat. Num.: Ccm 919 2 / Rel. Year: 2008 / Tracks: 24 (total). 10 (from Make It With You) + 10 (from Where Did They Go) + 4 (bonus tracks, three previously unissued) / Note: This is a legitimate issue, licensed from the company that owns the masters.

Album Covers Shown:

4 & 5. Title: Where Did They Go? / Format: CS & LP / Label: World Record Club / Cat. Num.: (New Zealand) C 02595 & R 0219 [also 1566 C] / Rel. Year: unknown / Note: The information that I have about this issue's catalogue numbers is somewhat suspect -- or at least confusing -- and should thus be deemed tentative.

6. Back cover of the original LP.

For more detailed information about any particular album (e.g., its track listing), you may use the album's release year to locate it in this discography's chronological LP Index (or, if it is a compact disc, in the CD Index).

Scope And Completeness

Bear in mind that this page concentrates on the original American issues. Foreign versions of those originals are not the page's primary concern. Abroad, EMI's pressings of Capitol albums generally featured the same artwork and the same tracks, but did not not necessarily have the same catalogue number. In this page, I have selectively included a few foreign pressings whose artwork is nearly identical to the American pressing. Other than those few, however, my research of non-domestic artwork has concentrated on finding front covers that are different from those of the American originals. For comprehensive listings of non-American pressings, consult this discography's British and Foreign pages.
