Peggy Lee's Bio-Discography:
Over One Thousand Recordings
by Iván Santiago-Mercado

Generated on Jan 21, 2016

The purpose of this miscellaneous page is to provide a full count of all of Peggy Lee's known recordings, which at the present time come to a grand total of 1,070. The count is divided in three parts. Listed in the first part are the recordings that Lee made for record labels (e.g., Capitol, Decca, Atlantic). The second part lists the recordings that she did for transcription companies (i.e., MacGregor, World, and Capitol's transcription branch). The last part consists of about ten items, most of them rehearsal numbers, which have been professionally mastered and released on official or licensed [not Public Domain] record labels. Each of these three parts follows a chronological arrangement and offers links to other pages of the discography, in which more detailed information about the listed recordings can be found. Further clarification on this list's exclusions and inclusions is provided at the bottom of the page.

earlier, because they had separately settled with AFM in late 1943. One such
label was Capitol. For additional details about the ban, consult section XIII of

The Second Record Ban (1948)

In effect from January 1, 1948 onwards, AFM's second ban of the 1940s once
again stalled the making of commercial records in American soil.  Not being
union members, non-instrument-playing vocalists were deemed exempt, and
thus free to record a cappella, or with backing from either foreign bands or
vocal harmony groups.  However, Peggy Lee was among the small number of
singers who abstained from doing any waxing for record labels or transcription
companies while the ban remained in place.  It was finally lifted on December
13, 1948. For further details, read the General Notes which are located near
the bottom of this page.

made instead on the basis of the segments in which the suite
was divided for 78 rpm issue. Hence two or more songs can be
found under the same master.  For the purposes of this listing,
however, each song is being counted as an individual unit.
Furthermore, the amount of vocal participation from Lee varies
from one number to another.)

Late May Or Early June, 1973
768. A Touch Of Class
(Possibly recorded for Brut Records. At the present
time, the accuracy of this entry remains uncertain.
The only semblance of evidence stems from a
statement made by the label's owner in the
entertainment industry magazine Variety. If this
unreleased master still exists, its whereabouts are
unclear; BMG's vault would be a possibility.)

In an article published by The Los Angeles Times
on February 19, 1978, Peggy Lee made passing
reference to some recordings which she had done
with a team of producers who apparently did not
follow through on the plans to producing and/or
secure a record label. Given the article's date,  the
event could have take place in 1976 or 1977,
although the 1973-1975 period should not be
considered out of the score, either. (See section
IV of the linked page, under letter I.)

General Points In Need Of Clarification

Inclusions
Every known record master has been listed, including guest vocals for other artists' projects and duet recordings. (Duets and guest vocals have been identified as such.) Similarly included are the canary vocals that Peggy Lee recorded not on her own but with a couple of big bandleaders (Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby), and the concert performances that her record producers taped for labels such as Capitol and Polydor.

Exclusions
On the other hand, the present list excludes any type of performance that is not normally identified as a recording made for a record label or a transcription company. Hence musical performances from television appearances, radio broadcasts, or film soundtracks are not herein listed. Alternate takes have been excluded, too.

Admittedly, some of the excluded performances could be said to unofficially qualify as studio recordings. Specifically, Peggy Lee's numbers from Bing Crosby's radio broadcasts (nearly 50 in total) were pre-recorded in pretty much the same manner as studio recordings, with their sound quality carefully monitored.

Similarly, some of Peggy Lee's own rehearsal performances were professionally recorded with her own active involvement, and have even been commercially issued. However, the document at hand is currently adhering to a strict policy which places such material outside of its realm. (In time, a separate list might be provided.) Allowances have been made for a handful of professionally recorded demos, concert and rehearsal numbers, all of them listed together in the last of the three main sections found above. I have included two of these numbers because they were carefully mastered and released on the legitimate record companies Capitol ("My Dear Acquaintance") and Universal (Easy Living - They Can't Take That Away From Me"). The others have been included because, though commercially issued on minor labels, they were originally mastered and released thanks to their original producer, Ken Barnes.

Re-recordings
In those few instances where Peggy Lee re-recorded the same song over consecutive sessions, the given song has been counted as one unit when the record company has assigned the same master number to all resulting takes. Conversely, any re-recording with a master number different from its earlier recording has been counted as a second unit.  (In an effort to bring more clarity to my handling of such re-recordings, I have included the master number next to each one, thereby making it possible for the viewer to check whether the number is different or identical.)

Additional Recordings To List?
Aside from those found above, I have no knowledge of any other Peggy Lee numbers recorded for record labels, nor for transcription companies. Of course, additional recordings could conceivably exist, but if they do, they remain hidden and unknown for the time being. Should they ever surface, I will certainly be incorporating them to the present count. (For other types of performances that could have been justifiably added to the list at hand but were not, see also under Exclusions above.)
