This page is primarily dedicated to Peggy Lee's film work in two formats: movie shorts and music videos -- the latter filmed for the Snader and Cinebox companies. An index at the end of the page lists all the VHS tapes, DVD discs, and LPs that include clips (or audio) taken from those two formats. The page also touches on Lee's work as a host of various TV variety shows (section IV) and the televised commercials on which she appeared (section V). Please notice that, besides their short length, the other common denominator of the film and TV work discussed herein is that it has been commercially issued to the public. Non-available TV shows and TV commercials will only be mentioned in passing below; they will be discussed at more length in a separate page that is currently under construction.
I. PEGGY LEE'S TELESCRIPTIONS (MUSIC VIDEOS)

Artwork Shown:
1-10. Title: Snader Telescriptions / Note: Shown above are scenes from each of the 10 music videos that Peggy Lee taped in 1950 for the Snader company. In order of display, starting with the first row, the ten Peggy Lee telescriptions are "I Only Have Eyes For You," "I Don't Know Enough About You," "I May Be Wrong (But I Think You're Wonderful)," "Why Don't You Do Right?" "You Was Right, Baby," "While We're Young" (second row, first image), "It's A Good Day," "What More Can A Woman Do," "I Cover The Waterfront," and "Mañana." As suggested by their name, telescriptions were shown in television, sometimes as filler between regular shows, sometimes as part of low-budget shows (e.g., Sponsor's Guest Book) whose real purpose was to sell local ads. For those shows, a host would be hired to give biographical information about the acts whose telescriptions were being shown. Telescriptions were also shown in cinemas, usually before the main feature. Movie houses would receive Lee's telescriptions in the form of two 16 millimeter film reels, one entitled Peggy Lee And The Dave Barbour Quartet, the other Peggy Lee With The Dave Barbour Quartet.
II. PEGGY LEE'S CINEBOX VIDEO
Missing Artwork:
1. Title: Cinebox Video / Note: According to various websites dedicated to the sale or to the examination of jukebox machines, a Peggy Lee video was filmed by the Italian jukebox company Cinebox. The song that Lee performed was "Hey, Look Me Over." Those websites give no further details about the video, and I am not aware of any corroborating evidence elsewhere. There is always the possibilty of error on the part of the websites' writers, or even in the company's own catalogue. (For instance, another singer's similar name-- such as Perri Lee -- could have been misprinted at some point in time.) Setting those possibilities aside, the claim is by no means far-fetched. Peggy Lee recorded her version of "Hey, Look Me Over" on May 19, 1961. Capitol released the number on 45 single about two months later, when Lee happened to be in England for the first time. At that time, Cinebox had distributors all over Europe. The company might have had operating offices in France and/or in England. Hence the possibility that Lee might have filmed a performance while in the United Kingdom is not out of the question. (Furthermore, Cinebox did open a branch in Miami, USA, in 1963.)
III. PEGGY LEE'S MUSIC SHORTS

Sources Of The Artwork Shown:
1. Title: Banquet of Melody / Note: Though used as the front cover of an unrelated CD, the image on display is actually a publicity shot from the 1946 Universal short under discussion, for which Lee sang two numbers. In the shot, she is likely to be singing "Don't Blame Me." The other number that she performed during the film was "I Don't Know Enough About You." According to various movie books (I have not seen the short myself), Banquet Of Melody was basically a string of music clips by Lee and by a few other acts; there was no significant acting or narration involved. Sadly, Banquet Of Melody has never been commercially issued, nor were either of Lee's numbers ever released in any video compilations.
2 & 3. Title: Midnight Serenade / Note: The last still shows Peggy Lee performing "It's A Good Day," one of the 4 numbers that she sang for the 1947 Paramount short Midnight Serenade. Unlike the previously discussed short, this 18-minute film consisted of a narrative around which the numbers were set. I have never watched Midnight Serenade, but I am acquainted with fellow fans who have seen it, though their watching took places decades ago. Lee apparently plays a singer on which the protagonist (Richard Webb) had a crush, to the chagrin of his friend (a disc jockey himself) . According to movie books, Midnight Serenade was actually left unshown until 1952, when Paramount would have finally sent it to cinemas as part of its Musical Parade Featurette series. However, that information is partially wrong; the film was definitely shown in movie theaters back in 1947, as part of the Paramount Musical Parade series. Thus the 1952 release was in truth a re-release. In the 1950s and 1960s, this short aired in some television stations, too. Whereas the print shown on TV was in black & white, the print that rolled in theaters was in 3-strip technicolor (image #2). As for releases on commercial VHS or DVD, Midnight Serenade has never enjoyed that privilege, except for the "It's A Good Day" performance, which has been pirated by numerous compilations, some of them mentioned below (mainly in part IX; also in part VII).
IV. PEGGY LEE'S TV HOSTING
General Note
In the early 1950s, Peggy Lee hosted or co-hosted various televised music shows: the simulcast Supper Club, The Peggy Lee Show, TV's Top Tunes, and Songs For Sale. All those shows were of a relatively short duration: 15 minutes to half an hour. She also spent a season or two as the female vocalist of The Steve Allen Show, which back then was a daily daytime program. She made one additional appearance as a TV hostess onThe Jackie Gleason Show in 1957, subbing while Gleason was absent. Out of all those shows' appearances, merely a couple of performances have been commercially released -- and not many more are known to be extant. (On a related note, Lee also had her own TV specials. A couple of them have been commercially released on video. Details can be found in this page.)

Still And Artwork Shown:
1. Name Of The Show: TV's Top Tunes / Peggy Lee and Mel Tormé seem to have been the earliest co-hosts of this show, which aired from 1951 to 1955. They actually served as hosts for merely a month or so. It is worth noting that this 15-minute-long show ran three times a week. (Hence Lee and Tormé are presumed to have performed in about a dozen episodes.)
2. Title: Fever; The Music Of Peggy Lee / Format: VHS & DVD / Label: Capitol / Cat. Num.: 72435 99365 9 8 (DVD) & 72435 99365 3 6 (VHS) / Rel. Year: 2004 / Note: This documentary includes two performances culled from TV's Top Tunes: the Lee-Tormé duet "A Fine Romance" and the Lee solo "Danny Boy." (Shown above is a trade ad for the DVD version of the documentary.)
V. PEGGY LEE'S TV COMMERCIALS
Artwork Shown:
1. Halo Shampoo. In 1954 and 1955, Peggy Lee served as pitchwoman for Halo shampoo. Her contract requirements included performing an impromptu Halo commercial while guesting in various Colgate Comedy Hour episodes. Shown above is a comic strip that Halo placed in various magazines, as part of its campaign. Such strips would typically be created for the various female singers who, over the years, pitched for this product.
Artwork Shown:
2. Title: Fever; The Music Of Peggy Lee / Format: VHS & DVD / Label: Capitol / Cat. Num.: 72435 99365 9 8 (DVD) & 72435 99365 3 6 (VHS) / Rel. Year: 2004 / Note: Contains, among its bonus tracks, one of the commercials that Peggy Lee performed on behalf of Halo.

VI. FULL-LENGTH VIDEOS WITH FIVE OR MORE OF PEGGY LEE'S TEN TELESCRIPTIONS
Artwork, Currently Missing:
General Note
I believe that the first two videos listed above were the earliest commercial releases of Lee's telescriptions. Since I do not own copies, my data about them is sketchy. Volume 1 may contain 6 Peggy Lee telescriptions (perhaps the same 6 listed under item #7 below). Volume 2 definitely contained 8 Peggy Lee telescriptions -- the same ones listed under item #3 below. Actually, all items listed below appear to be reissues of these two 1985 videotapes. As for Meet Peggy Lee, my information about it is even sketchier. It seems to have contained 8 telescriptions, skipping only "I Cover The Waterfront" and "I May Be Wrong." It is not clear if each telescription was shown in its entirety. however; this could have been a promotional item with only bits from each telescription.

Artwork Shown:
3. Title: The Vocalists / Format: VHS / Label: Storyville (also Virgin Music Video) / Cat. Num.: unknown / Rel. Year: 1988 (also 1991) / Note: Contains 6 of Lee's 10 telescriptions ("Why Don't You Do Right?," "I Cover The Waterfront," "I May Be Wrong," "I Only Have Eyes For You," "What More Can A Woman Do?," and "I Don't Know Enough About You"). VIII. ALBUMS THAT CONTAIN AUDIO OF PEGGY LEE'S TELESCRIPTIONS

Album Covers Shown:
1 & 2. Title: Peggy Lee's Greatest / Format: LP / Label: Camay / Cat. Num.: Ca 3003 / Rel. Year: December 1962 or otherwise 1963 / Note: These images show the original mono and stereo versions of this Camay LP. The audio of all 10 Peggy Lee telescriptions is included in both the mono and the stereo vinyl.

Album Covers Shown:
3 & 4. Title: Peggy Lee / Format: LP / Label: Camay / Cat. Num.: Ca 3003 / Rel. Year: 1965 or later / Note: These LPs are abbreviated editions of items #1 & #2. They contain 7 instead of 10 tracks, thereby dropping 3 of the telescriptions. For all four LPs, the catalogue number is identical.
General Note
Seemingly committed to vinyl without the application of any significant mastering, the sound quality of the above-listed Camay albums is atrocious. I am somewhat baffled at the thought that official retail outlets were selling material of such poor quality as late as the mid-1960s. Even more egregiously, nowadays Peggy Lee's Greatest is available on MP3 in the exact same terrible sound quality. (The image immediately above shows the MP3 cover; all 10 telescriptions included.)
IX. VIDEOS WITH CLIPS FROM PEGGY LEE'S MUSIC SHORTS
General Note
All items below contain the same "It's A Good Day" clip from the 1947 short Midnight Serenade. Also, the immense majority of them are exact reissues of item #1, the 1956 video which first compiled the Lee performance.

Artwork Shown:
1. Title: Jazz Ball / Format: VHS / Label: Republic / Cat. No.: 2106 / Rel Year: 1958 (Some source date it 1956, but my copy has a 1958 date) / Note: As the release date should suggest, this is an official release, not a Public Domain one. The narration of radio and TV announcer Art Gilmore holds together a collection of clips by various artists. "The incomparable Peggy Lee performs It's A Good Day," reads the blurb in the back cover of the video's box.
2. Title: Big Time Swing / Format: DVD / Label: Magic Play / Cat. Num.: Mp 5386 / Rel. Year: 2008
