Comments About The Earliest All-Peggy-Lee CD Issue. This is one of the earliest Peggy Lee CDs ever issued in the United States. It could be the earliest. Unfortunately, its exact release date remains unclear. Sources vaguely point to three possible years: 1984, 1988, and 1989. (Please be aware that the above-shown 1956 release date applies to the original LP only, not to the CD.) Complicating matters are the various reprintings of the CD. The most commonly found reprint dates are 1990, 1992, and 1995. On a different note, and as originally pointed out by D. Russell Connor in his Goodman bio-discography, listeners should be aware that the original Harmony LP (as well as all its derivates, including the CD version) features a faulty transfer of "That Did It, Marie": the vocal's first chorus is missing.



Explanatory Comments About This Discography's CD Index. [The following notes will apear in two pages, but apply only to the CD index page. If you are currently reading the LP index page, skip these notes.] All compact discs found in this CD index page are listed chronologically, in accordance to their year of release. Exceptions to the chronological organization involve a few entries in which the given CD has a LP version. In such cases, the release date is that of the LP, which generally is much earlier than the CD's date. Issues for which I have no release date are listed at the very end of the page.

Please notice that my annotation of this page is currently a work in progress. I have not completed the task of proofreading it. Also worth noting: portions of this page's notes can be found in the sessionography, too, sometimes in expanded versions. Exclusive to the present page are production credits for recommended compact discs, which are distinguishable from all other CD entires because their titles are in bold and in uppercase.

Non-American CDs have been excluded if they have a USA counterpart. (By "counterpart," I mean a CD that contains the exact same tracks and the same basic artwork as the American original.) I have prepared separate pages for such counterparts; consult this discography's Miscellanea section. Similarly, various-artists compilations have their own page in the Miscellanea section. Herein, you will find only a few various-artists compilations of special interest, such as those which include a previously unissued Peggy Lee master and those which are early (1940s, 1950s) releases from the companies that own Lee's masters.

The LP belonged to the "CBS Favourite Jazz" series, the CD to the "Enchantment Of Jazz Vocal" Series.

Notice that there is another CD edition, dated 2002, which allegedly expands the track listing from 16 to 24 numbers. (I use the qualifier "allegedly" because I have never actually seen this CD, and because I have come across other factual errors and confusion surrounding this release, as explained in the next paragraph.)

The 1979 release date applies to the LP only, which was issued by Tokuma Industries on its Dan Records imprint. As indicated next to the catalogue numbers, the CD version (Tkcf 77076) was issued in 2001. The cover is the same for both versions.

As shown above, this British item has been reissued numerous times. Titles vary from The Best Of Peggy Lee to just Peggy Lee ("Golden Greats"), but the the tracks of all those British editions are the same.

Various details suggest that these British versions should be deemed variations on an American album that has itself been reissued many times: Decca's The Best Of Peggy Lee (Dxb 164), a 2LP set first released in 1960. Common to all American and British LPs entitled The Best Of Peggy Lee is the same front cover photo, albeit the budget-looking British issues offer the photo in b&w, rather than in the full color of the American issues. (As for the "Golden Greats" titles, they use a different artwork.)

Also common to American and British titles are 11 of the above-listed 16 tracks. The handful of tracks not found in the American item are "He's A Tramp," "Just One Of Those Things," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me," and "Easy Living."

Since I do not own a copy of either the LP or the CD, my main dating sources for this particular reissue have been music guides. I have highlighted this issue because it includes some notable radio performances. It was also the earliest commercial release of any songs from Peggy Lee's World transcription output.

This issue is sometimes listed under the title With Dave Barbour & Billy May Bands, 1948, too. Notice that the 1985 release date seems to apply to the LP and cassette only; the earliest release date which I have found for the CD is 1994.

NOTES:
Not the full track listing; only tracks featuring Peggy Lee are listed. This issue, officially sanctioned by the Crosby estate and drawing from Crosby's own private tape library, was the premier commercial release of "On A Slow Boat To China" and "Cuánto Le Gusta." Over the ensuing decades, numerous Public Domain companies have gone on to appropriating both tracks. There were two volumes. The first (Gnp 9046) features the same exact front artwork, but the background's color is green instead of red and, of course, there are differences in volume number and a few other typographical details. Release dates for this issue and its companion (Volume 1, whose catalogue number is 9051) vary widely from one source to another: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2004. Perhaps it was re-pressed very frequently. My copy of volume 2 has a 1985 copyright date; The earliest claim that I have found for the CD is February 29, 1988.

In the estimation of my friend Lucas Tuinstra, "the Swiss company Joker Tonverlag AG [was behind] various labels of which The Entertainers is the most well known and they would often distribute their product via Italy which would then find its way to the rest of the world. Much of their product was on the border of legal and illegal, but with their way of distribution they got away with most of their releases. About The Album's Title

This album actually has two valid titles: Miss Peggy Lee Sings The Blues and, more simply, Peggy Sings The Blues. The reason why both titles are valid is that they are jointly used in most configurations of the album. In the case of the cassette tape and the compact disc, Peggy Sings The Blues appears in the front covers, whereas Miss Peggy Lee Sings The Blues is the title printed insinde, in the actual CD and CS. Only the LP sticks to the title Miss Peggy Lee Sings The Blues both in the front cover and in the vinyl itself. (As for the spine of the cassette, it uses the Miss Peggy Lee Sings The Blues variant.)

About The Recording Date

The exact recording dates for this album's performances remain unknown. The above-shown dating (January 29, 1988) is actually an approximation, to which I have resorted for indexing purposes. The precise date of all twelve performances falls between late January and early February 1988, but the exact dates remain unknown.

About The Release Date

The compact disc edition of Peggy Sings The Blues was originally released in November 1988 or a bit earlier, as proven by articles that were published that year, and which specifically review the album in its digital configuration. (Those reviews do not mention the LP or the cassette, but I believe that all three configurations were simultaneous released.) I do have an entry, needing further corroboration, in which the issue is listed as released in September 1988.

However, the CD is given a 1989 release date in some record guides. Most likely, those guides are pointing to the European edition of this album, which was indeed released in 1989. (Another possibility is that 1989 is, after all, the correct date. Since November 1988 is close enough to 1989, it could be that reviewers had received promotional copies well in advance of the album's release, and that they proceeded to review them before the CD came out. Such a possibility strikes me as unlikely, though -- particularly from a promotional perspective.)

The album went to a second pressing some time in 1992 or 1993, too.

In any case, I have chosen to give a 1988 date to the original release. 1988 is the copyright and sound recording copyright year given in all configurations of the album.

Reissues And Cover Artwork

MusicMasters' Miss Peggy Lee Sings The Blues has gone through a fair amount of pressings and reissues. MusicMasters' sister label, Jazz Heritage, reissued the album in 2002, in superior sound quality. Back in 1990, MusicMasters' parent company, Musical Heritage, also reissued the album, in two configurations (CD and cassette).

Re-pressings

A new catalogue number was assigned to MusicMasters' own 1992 re-pressing of the original 1988 album.

There has also been at least one licensee's pressing, which bears two catalogue numbers. The first of the two numbers is among those listed above (5005-2-C). The other catalogue number, D 143661, is accompanied by the legend "Mfd. for BMG Direct Marketing, Inc. under License," etc.

In a record guide, I have come across yet another catalogue number (820809) for the MusicMasters CD. This number is linked to S&R, which I presume to be another licensee, or perhaps a distributor.

Although those are the only pressings of which I am fully aware, I do not discard the possibility of others, which could bear entirely different catalogue numbers.

Conceived in commemoration of her 70th birthday (May 26, 1990), though released a month late. Gracing the front cover is a drawing of the Peggy Lee Rose, a flower that the American Rose Society officially named after the singer in 1983. Includes brief liner notes by Sammy Cahn, who at the time was serving as president of the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and as ASCAP's vice-president. The booklet also includes transcriptions of all the featured lyrics.

Like her previous album on MusicMasters, The Peggy Lee Songbook also earned her a Grammy nominations in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female. This was also the last of Peggy Lee's 14 Grammy nominations (12 bestowed on her, including one win; two bestowed on others but pertaining to her records). Or almost her last. In 1995, Peggy Lee received a very significant honor: The Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award. And a few years after she passed away, there were also two Grammy nominations in connection to her 2004 set The Singles Collection.

Please notice that the above-given recording date (November 1, 1989) is actually the first of the various days spent recording these performances. The last day was November 3.

Contrary to what the credits in this album might seem to suggest, Gordon Jenkins, Johnny Mandel, and Victor Young were not present at these sessions. Instead, those credits point to the fact that their respective arrangements of previous Peggy Lee recordings were used by Lee and company.

Following the original 1990 pressing of this album, MusicMasters did another, to which it assigned a new catalogue number. That second pressing is from around 1992. I have also come across listings for a CD edition of The Peggy Lee Songbook which is not credited to MusicMasters or to Musical Heritage, though it bears the same year as the original release. Its catalogue number is S&R 8208212; I presume S&R to be a licensee or a distributor. Although those are the only pressings known to me, I do not discard the possibility of others, which could also bear entirely different catalogue numbers.

Furthermore, the album was reissued on MusicMasters' parent company, Musical Heritage. There are also non-USA (re)issues of There'll Be Another Spring: The Peggy Lee Songbook on labels such as Limelight, Polygram, Phonogram, and Venus. Actually a reissue of the 1981 Glendale LP You Can Depend On Me, this CD and the earlier Glendale issue come close to featuring Lee's MacGregor output in full: they include 14 out of the 17 titles. The sound quality of Peggy Lee With The Dave Barbour Band is fine, though everything else, from the artwork to the absence of substantial liner notes, is drab and unappealing. Reissued in 1997 by the German label Capriole.

Along with a cassette from the mail order company Starline, the aforementioned items on Glendale, Laserlight, and Capriole are the only issues dedicated exclusively to Lee's MacGregor transcription recordings. (The Capriole issue adds some Nat King Cole transcription numbers.)

This CD single describes itself as an advance sample from the album Sounds Of The Loop. One year after its release, Park indeed released the album, which had been originally issued in Japan. (The original Japanese version contains the same tracks except in the case of "Can't Think Straight," which features not Lee but another vocal partner.)

The single actually contains not one nor two but three songs, all of them written by Gilbert O'Sullivan: "Can't Think Straight," "Sometimes," and "Divorce Irish Style." As already explained, the fine print in this CD single states that its three songs were "taken from the forthcoming album Sounds Of The Loop.

In the front cover, "Gilbert O'Sullivan & Peggy Lee" are jointly identified as the featured act, and the two artists are seen together. The more accurate billing for Lee would have been guest star, since the single's other two songs feature O'Sullivan alone (naturally).

The cover's photograph has a slightly fake appearance which initially led me to assume that two shots -- one of each singer -- had been pasted together. I still do not discard such a possibility, but now I feel more inclined to zero in on the backdrop as the element that gives the impression of artificiality. It is a blank yellow screen that is clearly substituting for the actual backdrop behind the singers. The clothes worn by the two artists in this photo are the same ones that they wore for their video.

Except for the year, the recording date assigned to this performance is approximate. The exact day of recording is unknown; the month is believed to have been either August or early September. The personnel should also be considered tentative. It is a collective personnel, taken from the Sounds Of The Loop album.

The overall sound quality of this CD cannot be said to be higher than middling, yet surely still far better than that of the old original 16" discs from which the performances were transferred. Bear also in mind the relatively early year of release. Significantly better sound quality can be heard in the so-called deluxe, 2001 edition of the Deja Vu CD Peggy Lee ("The Gold Collection" Series).

This album is a studio recreation of a live show that could not be released due to technical difficulties at the concert venue. Full details about the concert and about its difficulties can be found in the notes under the Capitol sessions dated May 1959.

On CD, Beauty And The Beat! exists in two master versions. One is a digital transfer of the takes exactly as they were issued in the original LP. That is the version heard in this 1992 CD. It comes from second-generation tapes which include dubbed-in applause and spoken introductions. The other version (2003) was remixed from the first-generation master (3-track) tapes. It has no applause and no spoken introductions.

This 1992 version also has many fans, for whom pleasure to be had in the recreation of a live-in-concert atmosphere. However, the lion's share of the praise has gone to the 2003 edition, due to the wealth of previously unheard vocal and musical nuance that it successfully captures.

Early pressings of this 1992 CD listed a personnel that, soon after the disc's release, was discovered to be erroneous. The correct personnel was listed in later pressings.

This CD was manufactured but left unreleased in the United States. I have come across repeated indication that it was released in Europe, presumably in small pressings. (For instance, my friend Thomas Ludwig has corroborated that he bought one copy at a record store in Germany, around 1992. I am also aware of store-sold British copies.)

Word of mouth suggests that the cancellation was due to Capitol's unwilligness to make a very small modification to the front cover, after it had already gone to print. Perhaps out of modesty (?), Quincy Jones is said to have objected to the sight of his name in the same size as Peggy Lee's. Hence he would have requested the change to a smaller font. Although this account originates in a reliable source, there is one factual detail that puts its veracity in doubt: the copies in existence do have Quincy Jones' name in a smaller font.

Perhaps fatigued after more than a month of concert performances, or perhaps beset by her various ailments, the seventy-second-year-old was not in optimal vocal condition at the time of these sessions. Acquaintances of the singer have privately reported that Lee wished to leave the album unreleased, but her contract commitment prevented any steps in that direction. Despite her misgivings about the quality of the work that she had turned in, Lee felt grateful to Chesky Records for their interest and for the opportunity that the label's owners had given to her.

The original edition of Sounds Of The Loop was released by Toshiba Emi (CD Tocp 6897). In that 1991 release for the Asian market, O'Sullivan sings "Can't Think Straight" in the company of pianist and vocalist Takao Tisugi. All the numbers included in that edition of Sounds Of The Loop were recorded between June 24 and September 12, 1991.

O'Sullivan's version featuring Peggy Lee was initially released by the British label Park in 1992 as part of a single also entitled Can't Think Straight (Park CD #15). The single describes itself as an advance sample from the album. One year later, Park finally released its own CD edition of the Sounds Of The Loop album (Park CD #19), obviously meant for distribution in the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, the United States. This Park edition contains two versions of "Can't Think Straight": the duet with Takao Tisugi (track #12) and the duet with Peggy Lee (track #6). Additional differences between the Toshiba EMI and Park editions are discussed here, in the notes under the session dated August 2, 1992.

Except for the year, the recording date assigned to this performance is approximate. The exact day of recording is unknown; the month is believed to have been either August or early September. Taken from the album's credits, the personnel is a collective one, and should also be considered tentative.

This CD was issued in other countries where different vocal partners accompany O'Sullivan for his rendition of "Can't Think Straight." Besides Tisugi, there is Kirsten Siggaard, from Denmark, and Silvia Tortosa, from Spain. (Details about how those duets were conceived and produced are fuzzy in all four cases. It seems likely that O'Sullivan and his partners recorded their respective parts separately, although in Lee's case O'Sullivan made a point of flying to New York and coming to the studio while she was recording her part.)

The CD's discographical notes suffer from a few errors, most of them pertaining to the inclusion of previously unissued alternate takes. To wit:

1. Its version of "Elmer's Tune" is described as a "previously unissued master." Such a wording is at the very least equivocal, if not plain wrong. Given the fact that the performance in question (CCO 3950-1) is not the master, the last of those three words should be "alternate."

2. The claim that CCO 3950-1 was "previously unissued" is also inaccurate. This alternate take was first issued by the collectors' label Phontastic, probably with the blessing of Benny Goodman himself, back in 1980. (As for the only other extant take, the master, Columbia first issued it in 1941, on its subsidiary label Okeh.)

The likely reason why Columbia (Sony) calls CCO 3950-1 unissued is because the company itself had not released it before. As explained by Goodman's bio-discographer D. Russell Connor, who wrote the notes for the aforementioned Phontastic album: "[i]n company with other major label producers, Sony refuses to acknowledge prior releases on unauthorized labels."

3. Similarly, take #1 of "Not A Care In The World" is described by the CD's annotator as a "previously unissued alternate take." Whereas it is true that Columbia had not issued this alternate before 1993, Phontastic certainly had.

4. The CD's take of "Shady Lady Bird" is incorrectly identified as #3. According to D. Russell Connor, the disc contains take #2 instead.

Please notice that the above-given recording date (August 29, 1988) is just the first of the various days spent recording these performances. The last day was September 2.

A British music fan once told me that a Peggy Lee LP entitled I Had A Love Once had been released abroad. No other sights of an album with that title are known to me. Most likely, the fan was confused about the title, and was actually thinking about Love Held Lightly. Also curious is his description of the item as an LP; to my knowledge, Love Held Lightly has been issued only on cassette and compact disc.

Though recorded for Harbinger Productions in 1988, this session's masters were first released in 1993 by Angel Records. Peggy Lee herself was the cause of the five-year delay. For specifics on this matter, consult the notes here, under the session dated August 29, 1988. In 1992, she gave a fresh listening to the mix and unexpectedly called Rudman to authorize the album's release. As Rudman remembered, Lee said to him on the phone, "you know, dear, I've been listening to this tape, and it's really pretty good. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't put this out if you want to." Once Lee gave her blessing, Bloom and Rudman took on the task of finding new investors in order to continue the project. After they completed that task, the producers' next hurdle was to convince the record labels that the album merited commercial release. Some of their past Harbinger projects had been successfully licensed to Stash Records, but in 1992 they were not finding any takers. "We sent tapes all over the place," Rudman told Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Rebecca Freligh, "and we kept getting told, Peggy sounds terrific, but why did you record all these songs that nobody knows?, which was very discouraging." Finally, the album was picked up by Angel Records, a label whose specialty was classical American music. According to what the company's vice president of marketing (Linda Sterling) told Freligh, Love Held Lightly struck the label as "a natural" for them. Since Angel Records was in reality a New York-based branch of Capitol, their release of Love Held Lightly signified Peggy Lee's return (of sorts) to her mother label.
